Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
01
How is hydroponic produce different from soil-grown?
Hydroponic produce is grown without soil, using a nutrient-rich water solution that delivers exactly what the plant needs to thrive. This method allows us to grow food in a highly controlled environment, resulting in several key differences:
-
Since it’s grown without soil, hydroponic produce is typically cleaner and has less risk of contamination from soil-borne bacteria or pests
-
Because we often harvest and deliver within hours, our produce tends to be fresher and more flavorful than store-bought, long-shipped greens and your taste buds will notice the difference.
-
Our controlled growing environment allows us to control light, temperature, nutrients, and water, which means more consistent size, texture, and taste.
-
Our hydroponic systems use up to 90% less water than traditional farming and take up less space, making them more eco-friendly.
02
Can hydroponic grown produce be certified organic?
While hydroponics has been a point of contention within the organic community, the Maryland Organic Certification Program, like the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP), recognizes that hydroponic production can meet organic standards if all provisions of the Organic Food Production Act (OFPA) are met.
03
Where can I buy Sable Greens produce?
Customers can buy directly from a website with the option of local delivery or pick-up options. We are also at farmer’s markets throughout Baltimore and will send out information of any upcoming pop-ups.
04
Does Sable Greens use non-GMO seeds?

05
How “local” is Sable Greens to Baltimore?
Sable Greens is located in the Northeast area of Baltimore city.
06
Does Sable Greens sell seedlings or starter kits for home growing?
Yes, and we have a frequently updated list of free resources for the new grower. We do not gatekeep the knowledge.
07
How do you control pests or diseases without soil?
Since we grow without soil and in a controlled environment, we tend to avoid a lot of the pests and diseases that traditional farms deal with. However, pest and disease management are still essential and we take a proactive, sustainable approach.
We regularly sanitize our systems, growing spaces, and tools. We carefully manage temperature, humidity, and airflow and implement daily crop inspections so we can catch any issues early.
When pests do appear, we rely on beneficial insects—a natural, chemical-free method of pest management, such as ladybugs are introduced to control aphids and soft-bodied insects.
08
I work at a school or business and would like Sable Greens to come share their knowledge about hydroponics farming. How can we get this to happen?
We are always looking for opportunities to share how everyday folks can grow their own food. We recommend you fill out a quick form here and we will take it from there.
09
I am a student majoring in sustainability or another related field. I would like to intern at the farm. Is this possible?
We appreciate your interest in this field and in interning at Sable Greens. At this time, we are not able to sponsor interns but hope to in the very near future.
10
Is Sable Greens open to the public for individual or group tours?
